Key Benefits
Safe, controlled stairway descent (and ascent for power opertated) under the guidance of one or two trained operators. Lightweight, sturdy, and easy to deploy and operate—can usually be used by a single person. Evacuation chairs prevent slipping and tipping during descent by integrating several safety mechanisms into their design.
Anti-slip tracks or rubber belts
These are engineered to grip the stair surface firmly, preventing unwanted slipping and ensuring slow, controlled movement down each step. The tracks reduce descent speed and stop the chair from accelerating uncontrollably or propelling the user forward.
Friction belts or modified V-belts
These create continuous friction with the stairs. As the operator guides the chair, these belts automatically regulate the speed, preventing sudden drops or loss of control, especially at stair nosings.
Sturdiness and balanced design
The wide wheelbase, solid construction, and ergonomic handle positioning lower the risk of tipping by ensuring the chair remains stable even on uneven surfaces or landings.
Operator technique and training
Safe operation requires the operator to maintain a firm, two-handed grip, keep the chair near the inside edge of the stairs, and use proper footing for stability. Consistent operator contact and correct maneuvering are crucial for preventing both slipping and tipping.
Safety Harnesses and Restraints
Multi-point safety harnesses and secure straps hold the passenger firmly in place, reducing the risk of falls or injuries during descent.
Track or Glide System
Most evacuation chairs use tracks or gliding systems for smooth, controlled stair descent. The built-in friction prevents rapid movement, allowing one person to guide the chair safely without lifting.
Ergonomic Handles
These provide operators with a comfortable and secure grip, allowing for controlled maneuvering on the stairs.
Lightweight, Sturdy Frame
The design is lightweight for easy handling yet strong enough to ensure the occupant’s stability and safety as they are moved.
Braking Systems
Some models are equipped with brakes or speed-regulating features to facilitate gradual, stable descent.
Designed for Single-Operator Use
Track-type evacuation chairs are usually designed so that a single trained operator can manage the evacuation, making the process efficient and reducing the need for multiple staff members.
Mandatory Operator Training
Proper training is vital to ensure the safety of both the operator and passenger. Training covers securely positioning the passenger, using safety restraints, and controlling the speed and movement of the chair, particularly on different types of stairwells.
Correct grip and posture
Operators are trained to always maintain a firm, two-handed grip on the designated handles or grips of the chair. Ergonomic handle placement ensures natural posture, reduces strain, and provides stable support while maneuvering the chair.
Safe maneuvering technique
Operators are instructed to keep the chair close to the stairs inside edge, leaning forward to shift the center of gravity safely without overreliance on their arms, which prevents the chair from tipping forward or sideways.
Securing the occupant
Training emphasizes the use of all safety harnesses and securing straps before transport, ensuring that the passenger is stable and cannot shift their weight in a way that could unbalance the chair.
Controlling descent speed
Operators are taught to use the chair’s built-in friction belts or tracks correctly, allowing the system to slow and regulate speed for each step, minimizing the risk of slipping or sudden acceleration.
Realistic practice
Training courses include hands-on practice with the evacuation chair, both as an operator and as a passenger, to build operator confidence and competence in real-world scenarios.
